Percy Harvin, the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver collapsed with a suspected migraine in training yesterday. Team coach Brad Childress said Harvin had been kept in hospital overnight for observation, but was now comfortable and resting.
The wide receiver had only been on the field for a few minutes when he collapsed on all fours at the team’s practice field in Eden Prairie. “He had an episode; I don’t know how to classify it,” Childress said. “Not really a seizure, but he had some trouble. I’d be remiss if I tried to qualify it one way or another.”
Harvin’s teammates formed a human shield around the player while he was worked on by trainers, in order to shield him from onlookers and the press. They kept up the shield while he was transferred by stretcher to an ambulance and ferried to hospital. After the incident, Childress had a quick brief with the team and they all knelt for a prayer for their teammate.
Apparently the player was conscious at all times but was not totally coherent. Vikings player Visanthe Shiancoe did not see Harvin collapse, but said: “Nobody wants a situation like that to occur.” and added “It is what it is. All we can do right now is pray for him. That’s all we can do. He’s a good guy, on and off the field. He’s dealing with some issues, obviously, but hopefully he’ll overcome that.”
Teammate Greg Lewis later visited Harvin in hospital and reported via twitter that he had seemed “upbeat”.
