The Lyrid Meteor shower peaks tonight (Saturday 21^stApril), with most meteors being seen in the early morning a few hours before sunrise on Sunday 22nd April.

All meteor showers result as the Earth passes through the debris field of a passing comet. Small sand grain sized particles burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere as the Earth passes through this field. The “parent comet” of the yearly occuring Lyrid meteor shower is called Comet Thatcher.

As the Earth’s orbit intersects the trail of debris left behind by the orbiting “parent comet” the particles in the debris field burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere due to friction. This action causes the meteors to leave quick streaks of light appearing to radiate from a particular area of the sky. Depending on the make up material of the debris, the colors of the light streaks can range from yellow through to orange, green and red.

Although not a precise point, the radiant of the Lyrid meteor shower appears near to the star Vega in the constellation Lyra (hence the name Lyrid meteor shower). So all of the meteors will appear to emanate from this point in the sky but will streak out in all directions from this point.

Because there is a new moon tonight (i.e no brightly visible face to the moon), the sky should be dark enough to get a good show of the Lyrid Meteor Shower.The darker the sky the better for any meteor storm or shower – and the moon, if bright, can interfere significantly with the ability to see the meteors (also commonly known as shooting stars).

Sometimes, depending if the Earth passes through a particularly dense “clump” of comet debris, the results can be spectacular with many shooting starts visible per hour. Although not known to be one of the biggest meteor showers in terms of numbers, there is always the element of surprise and uncertainty. Current estimates for meteors per hour for this year’s Lyrid shower is 10 to 20 per hour, but there is always the chance that you could see significantly more (or less!).

Where Do I look for the Lyrid Meteor Shower Tonight?

To find the best place to look for the Lyrid meteor shower you should locate yourself in the darkest skies possible – usually away from cities or any other source of light pollution. To find the radiant of where the Lyrid Meteors will emanate from you need to find the constellation Lyra, quite easily detected by finding the bright star Vega. In the northern hemisphere you will need to look north of north-east where the constellation Lyra will appear low on the horizon around 22:00 to 23:00 just before midnight. See image below:

The best chance of seeing meteors will be several hours after this, although there is always a chance of catching good shooting star sightings any time when the sky is dark enough. Other random or “sporadic”meteors that are not connected to the parent comet Thatcher may also be visible on any dark night.

Scientists have discovered a new “waterworld planet” adding to the hundreds of exoplanets already discovered by amateur astronomers and exo-planet researchers. The planet has displayed characteristics akin to a steamy water world shrouded in atmosphere, according to observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope. Dubbed “GJ 1214b”, the planet is said to be bigger than Earth but smaller than Uranus.

The planet lies forty light years away from our solar system and is orbiting a red-dwarf and scientists speculate that the geology would be very different to that of Earth with “Hot Ice” and “Superfluid Water” being touted as possible states of matter on the planet, which experiences immense pressures and heat.

Astronomers were able to detect the planet’s atmospheric make-up by detecting the way in which it filtered its star’s light.
